Frequently Asked Questions

How does this tariff calculator work?

Select a product category (HTS chapter) and enter your import value. The calculator applies the average MFN (Most Favored Nation) general duty rate for that chapter to estimate the tariff cost. Actual duties depend on the specific HTS code of your product.

What is the MFN duty rate?

The Most Favored Nation (MFN) rate is the standard tariff rate applied to imports from WTO member countries. It is the "General" rate column in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule. Countries with free trade agreements may qualify for lower or zero rates.

Has the de minimis $800 threshold ended?

The de minimis threshold is under ongoing policy changes. Executive orders in 2025 targeted eliminating the $800 duty-free threshold for shipments from China, though implementation has been paused and revised multiple times. Importers should verify the current status with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as the threshold may be reduced or removed for certain countries of origin.

Are these tariff estimates exact?

No. This calculator uses the average duty rate for the selected HTS chapter. Individual tariff lines within a chapter can range from 0% (duty-free) to the chapter maximum. For precise rates, look up your specific 8-10 digit HTS code on PlainTariff or consult a licensed customs broker.

What are special trade program rates?

The U.S. has free trade agreements and preferential programs (GSP, USMCA, KORUS, etc.) that reduce or eliminate duties for qualifying goods from partner countries. These "Special" rates are shown separately in the HTS and require meeting rules of origin and other conditions.

Does this include Section 301 or Section 232 tariffs?

No. This calculator shows the baseline HTS general duty rates. Additional tariffs under Section 301 (China), Section 232 (steel/aluminum), or other executive actions are applied on top of these rates. Those additional duties can range from 7.5% to over 100% depending on the product and country of origin.
