PlainTariff

Disclaimer & Responsible Use

PlainTariff is a free informational resource that makes the public USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule and FAO agricultural trade data easier to read. It is not legal or trade-compliance advice and is not a binding tariff classification. Use it as a starting point for your own research, not as the final word for an import decision.

Informational only, not compliance advice

Nothing on PlainTariff constitutes legal, customs, or trade-compliance advice, and using the site does not create any professional relationship. Misclassifying goods or applying the wrong duty rate can have real financial and legal consequences. For guidance on a specific shipment, consult a licensed customs broker or trade attorney. For the official, current, and complete schedule, rely on the USITC HTS directly before you act.

What a published rate is, and is not

The duty rates shown on PlainTariff are the general (MFN) rates published in the HTS — not a determination of what you will actually pay. The duty owed on a specific shipment depends on its precise 8–10 digit HTS classification, its country of origin, and any applicable preferential program, quota, or additional duty (Section 301, Section 232, anti-dumping or countervailing duties) layered on top of the base rate. The same product can fall under different tariff lines depending on its material, processing, or intended use. We present the published classifications; we cannot tell you which code applies to your specific product.

Data freshness and accuracy

Tariff rates change between USITC revisions and through trade-policy actions, so a rate on a page reflects the most recent HTS edition we have loaded and may lag a very recent change. FAO trade figures typically lag one to two years behind the calendar date. We work to keep the data accurate and aligned with the source, but we cannot guarantee it is complete, current, or free of upstream limitations. If you spot a figure that looks wrong, please report it through our corrections process.

Before you act on a rate

Treat PlainTariff as one input among several. Before you rely on what you read here, we recommend you also:

  • Confirm the current rate for your exact HTS code on the official USITC HTS, which is authoritative.
  • Check whether Section 301, Section 232, anti-dumping, or countervailing duties apply to your product and country of origin.
  • Confirm whether your goods qualify for a preferential (Special) rate under a free-trade agreement, including its rules of origin.
  • Consult a licensed customs broker for a binding classification before importing.
